PROJECT LIVING-DEAD 9

PROJECT LIVING-DEAD 8 - HERE

Slowly, Diya regained consciousness. Without opening her eyes entirely, she moved her hands towards the side of her head to retrieve her phone from where she would usually keep it every time she was about to fall asleep, but then she didn’t find it. Opening her eyes to check properly for it, Diya realized that she wasn’t at all in her room. Jerking up fully awake, she wiped her eyes with the back of her palm to be sure she wasn’t dreaming. Opening her eyes this time, the thought hit her. Her attack by some strange looking men from the previous night, wasn’t a dream after all. She had been abducted.

 “But by who? and why?”.

Standing up from the bed, Diya looked around the room she was been placed in, everything  was covered in pure steel including the floor. There was a huge mirror at the corner of the room. Just beside the mirror, was a table with a jar of water and a plastic cup placed on it. Diya moved towards the mirror and caught a glimpse of herself. Her cloth had been changed into a white loose t-shirt and a grey trouser that looked more like a tracksuit. The  thought of someone undressing her in her unconscious state caused her to shiver in fear.

“ stay calm, don’t show your fear”…….she whispered to herself.

Returning back to to the bed, Diya hugged her knees so tight and began to sob.

“I want to go home”……she muttered . Placing her head on her knees, she continued to cry profusely, so much that she wasn’t aware that someone had stepped into the room.

“I see you are awake?”…. said the voice. Causing Diya to turn around in a frantic state, only to see a man in his late thirties wearing a lab coat and pushing a medicine cart towards her.

“Who are you?”..... she asked.

“Well umm I am nobody actually, just a help around here who will be giving you your medications from time to time”.

“But I am not sick? Why do I need medications? Who are you people?”

“You ask too many questions young lady. Anyway, I was told you would react this way because you don’t remember a thing. Just let me do my job. And please do not struggle with me, that way it will be easier for the both of us”….. the strange man said as he placed a tray which had  several kinds of coloured liquids and syringes on her bed.

 Standing up from the bed, Diya told the man in a defiant tone;

“I won’t let you give me that. How am I sure that’s not going to kill me? I’m not taking any of that”

Smiling calmly, the strange man raised up the syringe in his hands towards the light, he tapped it with his fingers to make sure he had the right dose. When he was done, he turned towards Diya.

“Are you ready?”

“Leave me alone!”…..Diya screamed at him

“Young lady I told you not to struggle with me but I guess you’re a hard nut to crack. Alright we will have it your way”. Speaking into his lab coat which she soon realized had a hidden mic, he asked that some people be allowed into the room.

Just then a door which Diya never knew was there, opened and two strong looking men came in. Diya recognized them in an instant. They were the men from her house. The men who had abducted her.

"You remember them? Of cos you do I can see the whole familiarity on your face”….. the strange man mocked. “please hold her down”.

Diya struggled with the men but she was no match for them.

“let me go! Let me go!”…..she screamed.

She soon felt the prick of the needle and strangely also, she felt the fluid injected into her, move round her bloodstream. It had this strange sensation accompanying it, one that made her feel like her senses were heightened. It however soon knocked her out.

“Phew! Thanks guys…. This one here is a tiger! I tell you. The other ones are easy to handle”

“Any time doctor Abdul”……the men responded as all three exited the room.

Going through the log-entry for the day, Dr Bayo seemed impressed. The serum seemed to be taking effect as they had assumed and stated it would. His happiness was however cut short as soon as he picked up the log entry for TYPE-C - Diya Tamara-Preye. All the doctors who had been sent to her room to do rounds, complained that the serum seemed not be working rather it only served the purpose of sedative.

“Her body system seems to be adjusting quite well to the fluid and as such no visible changes has been noticed”…. one of the doctors wrote in his report.

This surprised Dr Bayo. Nobody had ever received that dosage of serum and still remained intact. This discovery intrigued him. He had to take up her rounds himself. He knew there was something about that girl and this just confirmed it. Standing up from his table, he rubbed his eyes to ease the ache he was feeling. Checking his wristwatch, it was 2:00pm, he hadn’t had any lunch, his tummy rumbled almost immediately to attest to the fact.  He decided to go make a quick round at the ward but before he left, he picked up a bottled fluid and a syringe which he put into his lab coat.
His last stop was at room 5. Dr Bayo walked into the room cautiously so he wouldn’t wake her up but she already was awake and was watching him walk into the room.

“I didn’t expect you to be awake”…..he said in a croaky voice.

“You! You! Dr Bayo! You’re in this too? Please let me go! Tell them to let me go I didn’t do anything!”……Diya screamed at him.

“Calm down TYPE-C you’re in safe hands”.

“Why are you calling me that? My name is Diya! And I just want to go home!”

“Soon my dear soon you will. But for now, we need the likes of you to make a remarkable niche in the area of armaments and weaponry. Have you heard of anything called “ A  Human Lethal Weapon?”

“No I have not and I do not want to. All I want to do is go back home!”

“See, my girl, I know you’re smart and you’ll understand. This discovery is going to place our government on the world map of world super powers. It’s going to put our names out there as geniuses who thought out of the box. You’ll be one of the best creations ever made!”

“ Creations?! Oh now I see!. This isn’t even Tech Company is it? The whole internship scheme was just a scam wasn’t it? You used it to lure unsuspecting and ambitious students like myself to be used as lab rats for your experiments?! All this was just a lie!”...... Diya said as she stood up and moved towards him. “You’re a devil! You’re wicked! I could strangle you!”.

“I wouldn’t say that if I were you. You see right now, all I want from you is your cooperation”

“And if I don’t give you that?”

“Well you would! Because if you don’t, I am afraid that umm we’ll have to hurt your mum to drive our message home”

“You wouldn’t dare! You don’t even know where she is!”

“Trust me I don’t make empty threats”….. He smiled in icky manner causing the hairs on Diya’s body to stand.

“In fact here”… he tossed his phone towards her. “Call your mum now tell her you’ve been selected to represent your school at a debate in china and that you would be away for a while”

“No I won’t!”

“Umm ok how about this, your mum is currently living in Delta, Asaba to be precise. No.12 DDPA Street just after the filmhouse. She is a widow, a retiree, attends Grace Tabernacle every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday”

Shaking visibly with fear, Diya asked in a voice that seemed strange to her ears; “How do you know all that?”

“Make the call”….he barked.
